The wavy horizontal stripe symbolizes the crossing from France to Port-Royal, in Acadia, by the family’s ancestor Jacques Maillet, a soldier of the Compagnies franches de la Marine assigned to defend the fort. The shell, the symbol of St. James (Saint Jacques in French), recalls the name of the first Maillet in Acadia, Jacques. The Tau cross, also known as the Cross of St. Anthony (Saint Antoine in French), alludes to Antoine Maillet, the father of Jacques. The tankard (choppe in French) recalls Françoise Choppart, the wife of Antoine. |

The fleur-de-lis evokes the Ancien Régime of France, and was found in abundance on the flag of the Compagnies franches de la Marine, as were the anchors. |
