Arms of David McClary JohnstonBlazonArgent on a saltire Sable a Maltese cross Argent, on a chief wavy Gules a balance between two cushions Or; SymbolismThe arms are based on those of the head of the Scottish border family of Johnston. In this case, a Maltese cross has been added, symbolizing Mr. Johnston’s service to the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, ultimately as Chancellor. In the original Johnston arms, the top section contains three gold cushions; here, the central one has been replaced by a balance, or scales of justice, to represent Mr. Johnston’s career as a lawyer. Also, the division line between the two sections is now wavy, to indicate Mr. Johnston’s 26 years of service in the naval reserve. |
CrestBlazonIssuant from a circlet Or the upper rim set with dogwood flowers alternating with purple violets proper, a spur in pale Or winged Azure each wing charged with an anchor Or; SymbolismBy using the provincial flowers, the coronet refers to the British Columbia birthplace of Mr. Johnston and his father and the New Brunswick birthplace of his paternal grandfather. The winged spur is found in many other Johnston crests. The addition of anchors on the blue wings is a further indication of Mr. Johnston’s naval service. |
