The sea-dragon is a Leviathan, a creature mentioned in the Old Testament, and represents his interest in the importance of a commonwealth, as expressed in Thomas Hobbes’ book entitled Leviathan. The sword alludes to his service as an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, which he does by commission from the Crown. |
