As we begin this eventful year on the international stage, it is a privilege for me to welcome the new representatives of our valued partner nations to Canada.

Life in the Arctic is shaped by the relationships that have bound Indigenous communities together for generations.

The opening of this consulate not only strengthens our diplomatic relations. It also reinforces Canada’s respect for the people of Greenland: respect for your democracy, your sovereignty and your right to shape your own future.

National attention on the Arctic brings resources and visibility that—when paired with strong community leadership and regional co‑operation—can translate into lasting benefits for Hudson and James Bays communities.

Today, by honouring those among you who have shown devotion beyond the call of duty, the Order of Military Merit shines a light on the vital importance of your work.

Across the circumpolar world, Indigenous communities know the land and waters in ways few others can.

As an Inuk raised in Canada’s Arctic, it means so much to me to see participants from across the circumpolar world come together and show what we can achieve.
