I am honoured to welcome you to Rideau Hall, which sits on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation.

Today, by honouring those among you who have shown devotion beyond the call of duty, the Order of Military Merit shines a light on the vital importance of your work.

I have just returned from Greenland, where I witnessed the opening of the new Canadian consulate in Nuuk.

There, as a nation committed to diplomacy, co‑operation, peace and security, we reiterated our respect for Greenlanders and their right to determine their own future.

Standing in the Arctic, I felt once again the profound sense of interconnectedness that binds us, as the security issues coming to the forefront there affect all peoples on Earth.

I also felt a deep pride in the remarkable work that members of the Canadian Armed Forces do—in the Arctic, across Canada and around the world.

You play a crucial role in protecting our country and in fostering peace and security globally.

In many ways, 2026 will be a defining year—a year of heightened commitments and pressures.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Canada’s first NATO deployment to Europe. The 27th Canadian Infantry Brigade deployed to Hannover, Germany, forging our long-standing commitment to collective defence.

This anniversary resonates deeply today, as our personnel continue to serve alongside our allies in NATO missions, including Operation REASSURANCE, in Latvia.

Next month, we will commemorate the 35th anniversary of Operation FRICTION and the end of the Persian Gulf War.

We thank you for your sacrifice and your outstanding dedication.

You are upholding Canada's legacy of co-operation and trust among allies and nations.

You have the courage to do what is right despite danger or difficulty.

You embody the values that unite us and make Canada stronger.

The Order of Military Merit is a call to continue striving for excellence in the face of the challenges ahead. It is a call to keep inspiring others and opening doors for them.

As commander-in-chief, and on behalf of all Canadians, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all colleagues, family members and loved ones here with you today.

Their love, support and understanding are essential to your well-being and your ability to serve.

I also encourage you to take care of yourselves as you pursue this challenging, remarkable career.

To all of you, congratulations.
