I would like to begin by acknowledging, as a gesture of respect to all nations, that we gather today on the traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe people.

Welcome to you all, and congratulations on your new positions!

Congratulations on your appointments as heads of mission from El Salvador, Sierra Leone, Panama, Micronesia, Laos and Qatar.

As we begin this eventful year on the international stage, it is a privilege for me to welcome the new representatives of our valued partner nations to Canada.

Many Canadians make resolutions at the start of a new year.

As you begin your work in Canada, I would like to suggest a simple New Year’s resolution: let us remain true to ourselves and to the values that unite us.

Rising tensions are reshaping both international dynamics and the global economy.

Yet the goals of diplomacy remain the same.

Co-operation, peace and security.

Sustainable development. Economic growth. Trade that benefits everyone.

As we look ahead, our nations can make valuable contributions by working together.

We can strengthen the bonds between our countries. We can commit to upholding democracy and international law.

We can remain steadfast in the pursuit of solutions that serve all peoples and allow them to determine their own future.

These principles are not just ideals.

They are the surest path to peace and stability.

So, Excellencies,

Let us remain true to ourselves.

We are strongest when we work together.

And to your families, I wish you a wonderful stay here.

As you make new friends and discover our amazing diversity of cultures, you will see that, even in the cold of winter, Canadians can offer a warm welcome.

Happy New Year and welcome to Canada.
