Message from the Governor General
on the Occasion of Commonwealth Day

OTTAWA— As The Queen’s representative in Canada, I am proud of our many contributions within the Commonwealth and of the part we are playing in trying to build a harmonious global environment.

It has been 150 years since the Fathers of Confederation achieved their vision of a better life with the founding of Canada. Over time, our country has become a model of inclusion and stands as proof that we can accomplish incredible things when we learn to overcome our differences and work together for the collective good.

The Commonwealth is also part of that tradition of collaboration. The theme of this year’s Commonwealth Day, “A Peace-building Commonwealth,” is an opportunity for all 52 member countries to celebrate the shared values that unite us—peace, democracy, equality—and to promote the rich diversity flourishing within our great family of nations.

To the people of the Commonwealth, I wish you wonderful celebrations and invite you to visit our country this year as we celebrate our 150th anniversary!
