Message from the Governor General on the Occasion of Citizenship Week
OTTAWA— It is a pleasure to mark Citizenship Week.
As governor general, I am honoured to preside over citizenship ceremonies, as new arrivals swear their oath and commit to the ideals of Canada.
Our nation is known the world over as a welcoming place built on democracy, human rights and the rule of law. It comes as no surprise that over the past decade, we have welcomed more than 1.5 million citizens from other countries. Thanks to their contribution, we all live in a multilingual, diverse society that I believe is one of our greatest strengths.
This Citizenship Week, let us celebrate the responsibilities and rights that all Canadians share and the wonderful opportunity that we all have to help build the smarter, more caring nation to which we aspire.
