It is a pleasure to join all of you here for this presentation of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.  

Since becoming governor general, I’ve had the privilege of meeting hundreds of smart and caring young recipients of this award.

Now you’re among them. Congratulations!

I’m always inspired to learn about the achievements and dreams of Duke of Edinburgh Award recipients.

It also reminds me that a smarter, more caring nation is a goal, not a given.

It’s a goal that is achieved through hard work.

All of you here today have a desire to change things for the better. Already you are making an impact.

You are leaders and advocates for all kinds of important issues.

You are fighting for equality and fairness.                

You show compassion and concern for your communities.

You care about the well-being of our planet.

And together, you’re using your skills and passion to create a better country one community at a time.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a wonderful tribute to the energy and idealism of young people.

You’re a vital source of ideas and renewal for our country, and I know our confidence in you is well placed.

Next year, Canadians will celebrate our 150th anniversary as a nation. It will be a great party, and we’ll reflect on how far we’ve come.

But I want to remind you: the future is not pre-determined. We can take nothing for granted. It’s up to us to build the future of which we dream.

As recipients of The Duke of Edinburgh Award, you now have a new responsibility. This is a prestigious award—how will you leverage it to make this country better?

Already you have done great things. Your continued efforts are critical to our future.
