Message from the Governor General of Canada
on the Occasion of National Aboriginal Day
OTTAWA—National Aboriginal Day is an opportunity to recognize the rich cultural heritage of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis, as well as their significant contributions to this great country.
Recently, the closing of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission reminded us of how vital awareness, understanding and responsibility are. Our actions must be consistent with our words so that we can continue moving forward and demonstrating our commitment to respect, tolerance and inclusiveness.
I am heartened by the leadership and drive of Aboriginal youth and applaud the increasing number of programs, youth forums and gatherings that aim to share and preserve ancestral cultures and traditions. These initiatives are breaking down barriers and play an essential role in building a society of many voices, one that fosters diversity and open-mindedness.
Canada would not be what it is today without the contribution of Aboriginal peoples, to whom we proudly pay tribute on this day. I wish you all meaningful celebrations.
