Nanaimo, British Columbia, Thursday, January 29, 2015
It is a pleasure to be here in Nanaimo with all of you. Sharon and I would like to thank you for your warm welcome and for inviting us here to be with you.
I am especially pleased that we are joined by leaders of this community; those who have contributed in many ways to the growth of our nation. Your accomplishments are inspirational, and I know that you will continue to do great things for Canada and for Vancouver Island University, which is hosting these festivities.
Although only recently established as a university, VIU has a long and storied history. What strikes me most is the determination of the staff, students and community since the 1930s to keep this institution alive in one form or another, and to build on the reciprocal relationship between the school and the community over the years. Today, Vancouver Island University is a great learning institution that benefits the entire community. It is an honour to be recognized by all of you, particularly as I have spent so much of my life in the world of academia.
Yet, perhaps the most valued memory I have of my 27 years as a university president is the interactions with students. It was the young people with whom I came into contact who gave me hope for the future of this country.
That is why I am so delighted that I will be able to address graduating students once again. It is a familiar position to be in, but I never tire of seeing the determination and idealism on the faces of a new generation of graduates.
Sharon and I would also like to congratulate Louise Mandell on being installed as Vancouver Island University’s second chancellor. Louise, your experience and your passion will certainly be great assets to this school, and I have no doubt that you will continue to be a leader and an inspiration for Aboriginal people and for all students fortunate enough to receive an education at this school.
And to outgoing chancellor, Shawn Atleo, dear friend and outstanding Canadian, I thank you for your service to Vancouver Island University and for being a wonderful role model for youth.
Let me end by saying how proud we are to be here among friends and supporters of a smarter, more caring nation, those who are giving generations of Canadians the opportunity to succeed.
Thank you.
