Message from the Governor General of Canada
on the Occasion of National Philanthropy Day

OTTAWA—Every one of us has resources at our disposal that allow us to contribute to the common good. Philanthropy is expressed every day through a multitude of concrete actions, be they simple or grand, that make a difference in people’s lives. They are based on the values of mutual assistance, compassion and solidarity, which guide the acts that people perform for others.

By making a concerted effort, we can address all of the challenges that society is facing. Regardless of financial means, philanthropy is founded on the idea that everyone has something to give and something to gain by showing compassion for others. Donating to a charitable organization, providing a meal to a family in need, helping someone with their heavy parcels—philanthropy can take on a variety of forms.

On this National Philanthropy Day, I challenge all Canadians to dare someone to give with them. It can be time, money or talent… the possibilities are endless!
