Accra, Ghana, Wednesday, May 15, 2013
Thank you for welcoming Sharon and me so warmly. What a pleasure it is to meet with so many friends of Canada here in Ghana.
Our two countries are partnering in a variety of ways. Indeed, there is a reason Ghana is a country of focus for Canada—there is so much potential for a greater and more prosperous relationship, which would be built on our already strong ties.
Many Ghanaians pursue education in Canada, a desirable destination for education, one that offers instruction in both official languages and that offers great flexibility in programs.
Many young Canadians take time, as part of their studies or on their own, to work in partnership with Ghanaian young people to make Ghana a better place. These young people find their experiences in Ghana very meaningful, and through them, ties are deepened even further.
We have a great deal in common, as upholders of such values as democracy and good governance. But the promise of what we might accomplish together is so much greater because of our people-to-people ties, and that begins with all of you here with us today. You, who recognize how important it is for countries like ours to work together.
We are collaborative because we know that is the best way to achieve success domestically and internationally.
This desire to work together is at the heart of our relationship. It is a characteristic that I have observed in expatriate Canadian communities around the world, and it is one that Ghanaians no doubt carry with them everywhere they go as well. Certainly the large community of Ghanaian-Canadians has been adding so much value to our own society.
We are working together in many diverse areas of society, such as through trade and innovation. And we are also supporting and promoting the values of democracy, good governance and the rule of law.
Our expanding relationship would not be possible without the dedication of people like you. This gathering is cause for celebration. Together, you are making real contributions to Canada and to Ghana. For Canadians, communities like this are a great asset. You help to extend our range and to broaden our understanding of this important region.
The world has long embraced Canada and made us stronger, and today, Canadians are reaching out and forging new links with countries such as Ghana, an important partner in the region.
Together, it is up to us to create the smarter, more caring world of which we dream. Let us strive to build fair, prosperous and inclusive societies in which equality of opportunity and excellence go hand in hand.
Together, we have much to learn from each other, and I thank you for your contributions to our enduring friendship.
