Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of
National Acadian Day
OTTAWA—I am delighted to extend warm greetings to Acadians across Canada who, on this August 15, 2012, are celebrating National Acadian Day.
Acadians formed the first French colony established within the borders of the vast and majestic land that would one day become Canada. The remarkable resilience that they have shown throughout their history has helped to make their unique language, culture and customs one of the cornerstones of our collective identity.
Today, nationwide and even among our neighbours to the South, we can appreciate the richness and vitality of that heritage. National Acadian Day is a wonderful opportunity to discover or learn more about this priceless legacy.
I invite all Canadians to make the most of these traditionally colourful celebrations, and to those taking part, I wish you an unforgettable experience!
David Johnston
