Statement from the Governor General of Canada Following
his Meeting with Canadian Athletes at the Olympic Village

LONDON, ENGLAND—Today, Sharon and I had the distinct pleasure of meeting our country’s top athletes during the Canadian Olympic Team Welcoming Ceremony in London’s Olympic Village. We were so impressed and inspired by their passion, their determination and their Olympic spirit, as well as by the sacrifices they and their families have made over many years, so that they may compete in the world’s premier sporting event. They have our utmost respect.

During the ceremony, as we sang the national anthem with our Canadian athletes, Sharon and I were overwhelmed with a great sense of pride. We truly felt like we, along with all Canadians, were part of the Canadian Olympic Team. In that moment, we witnessed the magic of the Games and its power to bring Canadians together to celebrate who we are as a country.

This is only the beginning of an exciting Olympic journey. We are both very honoured to live this experience and to represent Canada at the opening ceremonies on July 27. Please join us in encouraging our Olympic and Paralympic athletes as they strive for excellence. Go Canada Go!
