Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-chief of Canada, on the Occasion of the Canadian Forces Day
LONDON, England—Although my wife, Sharon, and I are in London to take part in The Central Weekend celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, we would like to extend greetings to everyone joining in Canadian Forces Day celebrations.
As commander-in-chief of Canada, I have a profound admiration for the men and women who serve or have served in the Forces. I recently had the great privilege of participating in the Remembrance Ceremony in Honour of the 95th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in France. I saw first hand the extent to which that site is steeped in history.
It is a place that conveys the terrible price that nations pay in times of war, but equally apparent are the ingenuity, solidarity and unshakable determination of our soldiers, striving for peace and freedom. Through their courage, dedication and an extraordinary sense of duty in unimaginable circumstances, they are a tremendous source of inspiration to me. On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to pay tribute to all members of the Canadian Forces, to their families and loved ones, by expressing my heartfelt gratitude and utmost respect.
May the celebrations prove enjoyable and enriching.
David Johnston
