Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of The Central Weekend to Celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
LONDON, England—On behalf of the people of Canada, Sharon and I offer our warmest wishes to our Sovereign on the occasion of her sixty years of reign, as we celebrate her Diamond Jubilee during the Central Weekend. I am delighted to be serving as governor general at this historic milestone and I am honoured to participate in these events in London.
The Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen is a celebration of a lifetime of committed service, steadfast loyalty, and true dedication, and it is also a celebration of our wonderful country and its evolution.
The many Canadian events and milestones in which our Sovereign has played a vital and active role include the proclamation of our national maple leaf flag in 1965; the creation of the our Canadian Honours System, the Order of Canada and the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Confederation in 1967; and the proclamation of the Constitution Act in 1982.
Her Majesty, our constitutional monarch, personifies our state and is an enduring symbol of allegiance and unity for us all. She has reigned for six decades, and as our Sovereign, as Queen of Canada, safeguards our rights and freedoms as Canadians.
This historic weekend celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gives us an opportunity to rejoice and reflect on all that she has done for our nation and for the countries of the Realms and Commonwealth. It is a moment for us all to show her our deep affection and admiration, and to thank her for her selfless service as Sovereign over the last sixty years.
David Johnston
