Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, on the Occasion of Canadian Forces Day

OTTAWA—I consider it a great honour to serve as commander-in-chief of Canada.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting some of our extraordinary military personnel and their families as I joined them in the National Capital Region to mark Canadian Forces Day.

I have tremendous respect for those of us who answer the call of their country and serve within the Forces. Their innate sense of duty, their outstanding professionalism and their strong leadership are, for me, a source of inspiration and pride. In Canada and abroad, the dedication and courage shown by these men and women are nothing less than extraordinary.

Whether they are engaging in operations to maintain a more secure environment, helping people in danger, or risking their lives to save others, we can attest to their bravery and determination. Our soldiers often agree to do the impossible in order to protect the values we hold dear, and while the sacrifices they make are countless, I know that their families and loved ones also share this burden.

I can only imagine the difficulty of being frequently separated from one’s family, or the anxiety caused by postings to dangerous missions. Thankfully, the military family is one that is close-knit; during my meetings, I have been impressed by the solidarity and support that exist among those who are left at home.

On this Canadian Forces Day, I invite everyone to join me in honouring the members of the Canadian Forces and their families. The contributions they make are invaluable, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

David Johnston
