Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of Commonwealth Day

OTTAWA - Canadians will agree that the theme for the 2010 Commonwealth Day, “Science, Technology and Society”, is a strong call to action and co-operation among the 54 Commonwealth countries and their two billion citizens.

Strengthening the delivery of better health care, ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources and securing access to food and clean water, among other goals, depend largely on science and technology. Most importantly, however, these challenges we face in the pursuit of a greater well-being must be addressed equitably for the prosperity of all of our member states.

With science and technology, we have the tools to disseminate ideas, to find solutions and to generate strong bonds among the peoples of the world. Let us use these tools to build societies in which everyone, everywhere, has an equal opportunity to achieve his or her highest potential.

Michaëlle Jean
