Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of Black History Month

OTTAWA - I am very proud to celebrate Black History Month, and to highlight the decisive contributions that African-Canadians have made in building a country that is enriched today by its blending of cultures and by its diversity.

Like most episodes that have marked humanity, the events that led the first blacks to set foot on Canadian soil were often heartrending experiences. But black history is much more than a story of pain and suffering. It is also an anthem of courage, determination and perseverance.

In the face of adversity, our ancestors of African origin showed their true qualities and their remarkable strength. Their words and actions bore witness to the unwavering power of communities and solidarity, creating a spark of light in the darkness for those who would follow in their footsteps. At a time when the courage of our sisters and brothers in Haiti is once again so sorely tested, I salute the friendship and solidarity being demonstrated all across Canada and throughout the international community.

Black History Month is an opportunity to discover and recognize the vital role the black community has played in building a society based on the rule of law, respect for human dignity and gender equality, values that are cherished by all Canadians.
