August 28, 2024
Today, I have the honour of representing Canada at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.
Over the coming days, I look forward to encouraging and supporting Canada’s impressive Paralympic team. Our athletes are sending a clear message to the world: every athlete can aspire to excellence and inspire the world.
Some have already achieved rare feats—and even broken world records—in their sport. Many of them are supporting remarkable social causes, such as improving health in their communities.
What I see in them is ajuinnata, an Inuit word that evokes the strength to never give up in the face of obstacles.
When we choose inclusion, all of humanity is stronger for it.
Thank you to all of our athletes for carrying this message of hope in the universal language of sport. Thanks also to their coaches, their families, the Canadian Paralympic Committee and all those who support them.
Good luck, Team Canada!
Mary Simon
