OTTAWA— Dear citizens of Nova Scotia,

There are no words that can describe the horror and sadness we all felt, across the country, as we heard the news of the terrible violence that claimed so many lives in your province. 

With Nova Scotia already under immense pressure from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, this devastating act adds new levels of pain and grief. We are heartbroken.

Our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, and to the family and colleagues of RCMP Constable Heidi Stevenson, whose courage in the line of duty will never be forgotten.

Our best wishes also to all those who have been injured, in body and in mind, and our profound thanks to the brave officers and compassionate first responders, who did everything possible to save lives and who continue to ensure the safety of our streets.

I hope you can find courage in their example, and solace in the resilience of your community. 

A tragedy of this scale is so rare in our country that is almost beyond our comprehension. It calls for more than simple words. It calls for tears. And for solidarity. 

We do not choose when hardship comes, but we can choose how we respond to it.

More than ever, let us stay united in these hard times – to reach out, be kind to one another and to care for those who need it.

We are all together in this fight against the virus, and all together in the face of adversity.

There is light ahead, however far away it may seem.
