Welcome to this presentation of insignia of the Order of Canada and Meritorious Service Decorations.
I am happy to present these honours to you here on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
By being appointed to the Order of Canada, your names join thousands of others – including famous British Columbians like the Honourable Rosemary Brown, environmentalist David Suzuki, and the late Vancouver artist and human rights activist Joe Average.
People who, like you, have enriched our cultural, sporting or intellectual lives. People who have advanced science and medicine. Human rights. Peace and social justice.
What I see in your remarkable contributions is a search for progress and truth.
And for this, we thank you.
I see the same search for progress and truth in those of you receiving Meritorious Service Decorations today.
You have fought for equal rights for newcomers to Canada. You have defended women’s rights abroad. You have helped marginalized communities around the world.
Your dedication and service have made a significant impact.
To all of you: congratulations on receiving this well-deserved honour.
