Good evening.

Tonight, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Canada.

Tonight, we celebrate your work and that of generations of professionals dedicated to improving justice and equality under the law in our country.

Your work is essential. You are making our judicial system evolve at the same pace as our society.

Over the years, your work has adapted to reflect our evolving concerns, values and ideals.

Your decisions have impacted our lives in all areas, from immigration to the environment and abortion rights.

I am also grateful to see how courts have evolved in their approach to Indigenous peoples, and to diversity in judicial decision-making.

When we foster true representation and equality under the eyes of the law—we build trust and legitimacy. We build equality of opportunity for all.

And we uphold democracy, one of our most valuable assets in confronting the challenges that lie ahead.

Thank you for participating in this symposium. Thank you for preparing the future of our institutions.

Thank you for your invaluable work and for being here to contemplate the future of justice with your peers.

Enjoy the symposium!
