Governor General to celebrate National Acadian Day in Nova Scotia at the Congrès mondial acadien

OTTAWA, Ontario—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Whit Fraser will undertake a visit to Nova Scotia from August 14 to 16, 2024.

The Governor General will attend the Congrès mondial acadien and, along with thousands of Acadians, Francophones and Francophiles, take part in National Acadian Day celebrations in Yarmouth.

She will also mark the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council’s landmark anniversary to help them celebrate everything they have contributed to their communities over the years.

While in Nova Scotia, the Governor General will also meet with first responders and visit The Flower Cart Group to learn more about their initiatives and participate in their programming.

This visit is an opportunity for the Governor General to celebrate community and culture, and to meet with individuals who work every day to better the lives of their fellow citizens.

Wednesday, August 14 – Truro, Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia Co-operative Council’s 75th anniversary celebration

The Governor General will deliver the keynote address and meet with the organization’s leaders and membership. The Nova Scotia Co-operative Council helps local businesses start up and grow by providing education, marketing support and representation to credit unions and co-operatives. They also foster initiatives that help build stronger, more resilient and more compassionate communities.

Reception to celebrate the beginning of National Acadian Day activities

Start of the Tintamarre

The Governor General will join Her Worship Pam Mood, Mayor of Yarmouth, to signal the start of the Tintamarre. Tintamarre is an annual parade with thousands of participants banging on pans, ringing bells and making noise in a celebratory manner to commemorate the resilience of Acadian communities who survived the Great Upheaval, a forced expulsion that started in 1755.
