Message from the Governor General of Canada on the Occasion of the Opening of the 2015 Canada Winter Games
OTTAWA— I am delighted to have this opportunity to mark the opening of the 2015 Canada Winter Games. Being held in Prince George, British Columbia, this celebration of youth, sport and culture will bring together some 2 400 athletes, 1 000 trainers and officials, 4 500 volunteers, and thousands of visitors.
The Canada Games are essential to our athletes’ growth and development, allowing them to measure themselves against the best athletes from every province and territory. They serve as a springboard for international competitions and inspire future generations of champions to excel, aim higher and make their own dreams a reality. Clara Hughes, Sidney Crosby and Marianne St-Gelais are living proof of this.
I had the honour of proclaiming 2015 the Year of Sport in Canada. Throughout the year, the pivotal role that sports play in our collective identity and some of the key moments in our leading sport nation’s history will be highlighted. This initiative will help to build momentum leading up to the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.
This year promises to be memorable! Canada will play host to a number of major sporting events, including the Pan Am Games, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the IIHF World Hockey Junior Championships, and, of course, the Canada Winter Games.
I believe that taking part in these Games is a victory in itself. Congratulations to all of the athletes who are sure to dazzle spectators. And to everyone who will have a hand in ensuring the success of the Games, I hope that this will be a truly unforgettable experience!
