Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable
David Johnston, Governor General of Canada,
on the occasion of National Volunteer Week
OTTAWA—In Canada, we are truly blessed to live in a society that values generosity and sharing. Canadians recognize that helping one another and supporting worthy causes is both the right thing to do and the bright thing to do. It is both smart and caring.
That is why I am so pleased to extend greetings to all Canadians on one of the most important weeks in our calendar: National Volunteer Week. This occasion provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon the contributions volunteers make to our collective well-being. Those who get involved and help others deserve our admiration and our appreciation, and I hope all Canadians find time this week to thank a volunteer.
In addition to thanking those who give so generously of themselves, I encourage you to share your own experiences and stories of volunteerism at www.mygivingmoment.ca, an innovative online campaign launched last fall as a way to foster and celebrate giving in Canada.
In a democratic society, everyone has something to give, and
I would like to sincerely thank all those volunteers who help to make this a kinder, more caring country.
Happy National Volunteer Week, Canada!
David Johnston
