Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of National Child Day

OTTAWA— Sharon and I profoundly believe that there is nothing in this world more precious than children. Their happiness is vital to that of society as a whole, and it is important that they be given their rightful place among us. As adults, it is our duty to offer them the love, resources and support they need to grow, thrive and reach their full potential. When we care for our youth, they in turn will grow into smart and caring citizens.

On National Child Day, Canada proudly celebrates the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It is our hope that one day soon, every child on every continent will be protected from danger and treated with respect and dignity. All children have the right to a happy childhood, where they are free to play, dream and learn.

Today, let us speak out on behalf of children everywhere and give them the opportunity to be heard. I wish all children a day as unique as they are!
