Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable
David Johnston, Governor General of Canada,
on the occasion of National Volunteer Week

OTTAWA— There is a saying that volunteers are paid in smiles, and while this is true for some, many volunteers work behind the scenes, without acknowledgement of the much-deserved gratitude we owe them.

Canada is particularly fortunate to count millions of volunteers among its people. National Volunteer Week, which takes place between April 21 and 27, offers us the opportunity to thank the legions of volunteers who give generously of their time and of themselves to make our country a better place. All across the land, in cities, towns and small communities, volunteers work altruistically and with commitment, contributing to Canada’s becoming a smarter, more caring nation. Let us express our heartfelt thanks for their tireless work, and celebrate and nurture the spirit of giving from sea to sea to sea.

On the occasion of this 10th National Volunteer Week, I would like to extend my best wishes and warmest thanks to our Canadian volunteers.

David Johnston
