Message from the Governor General of Canada on the Occasion of National Child Day

OTTAWA—As the proud parents of five daughters and grandparents of nine grandchildren, Sharon and I take the wellbeing of children deeply to heart. It is important for us to commemorate National Child Day 2012.

November 20 marks the day when, over 20 years ago, Canada adopted the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This convention outlines just some of what children under the age of 18 need in order to thrive and reach their full potential. The cornerstones of this treaty are non-discrimination, the best interests of the child, the right to live, survive and develop, and respect for the opinions of the child.

National Child Day is a wonderful opportunity for Canadians of all ages to learn more about the Convention. A range of activities has been organized to promote the rights of children, to increase public awareness, and to provide a forum for young people to express themselves.

Sharon and I encourage all Canadians to take an active part in this day.
