Presentation of Exemplary Service Medals
Saguenay (Chicoutimi), Monday, June 22, 2009
As governor general, I have the privilege of meeting exceptional women and men who shine through their bravery, their volunteerism, their creativity or the invaluable contribution they make to the evolution of our society.
And it always gives me great pleasure to be able to honour them in their communities, in front of their friends and families. Because the ceremony takes on even greater significance through the connections that tie them to their communities.
We have gathered today to honour 18 citizens of the Saguenay region—17 police officers and 1 firefighter—who have served their community for 20 years with exemplary devotion and efficiency.
You are all motivated by the same ideal: to protect your fellow citizens from danger, regardless of the risks you must face.
Your role, as a civilian force serving the community, extends beyond fighting crime or fires.
You are called to act in times of disaster or emergency, often as first responders.
You make great efforts to inform people about prevention and caution, whether by speaking to students in the classroom, performing simulation exercises or taking part in community activities and fairs.
You also play an active role in the life of the community, by raising funds and collecting goods, and acting as spokespersons for various causes.
Because of you, because of your high degree of professionalism and your commitment, the citizens of the Saguenay region feel safe, and are proud to be able to rely on efficient police and fire departments that are looking out for their well-being.
We present you with these medals to recognize your long years of service and your accomplishments. May these awards also serve to inspire others to reach higher and surpass themselves.
Gentlemen, through your experiences and your constant dedication to duty, you have certainly set a very high standard for those who will follow you.
On behalf of your fellow citizens, I would like to tell you how proud we are of you and how grateful we are. Congratulations!
