During the flooding of the Saguenay in July 1996, approximately forty St. John Ambulance volunteers took immediate action to assist victims of the disaster. On duty day and night for thirteen days at two first-aid centres, the volunteers served in countless ways. In particular, they provided valuable assistance to physicians and nurses and even prevented an attempted suicide. One team of rescuers helped evacuate residents to shelters, while another provided constant service in spite of closed bridges and roads. During this stressful period, the rescue workers repeatedly demonstrated courage and resourcefulness. Their competence, actions and prompt response to the demands of the situation provided safety and comfort to the local residents struck by a major disaster.
