His involvement with Newfoundland's artistic community began in the 1950s when he displayed his talents both on stage and as a fundraiser. Over the years he has raised monies to finance a variety of initiatives for a wide spectrum of organizations. As Chair of the School Children's Food Foundation, he secured corporate sponsorship for the province's breakfast and milk programs, aimed at reducing child hunger. He also advocated for the establishment of the province's film development commission which has made significant inroads, attracting more productions to the region and providing a viable alternative to traditional avenues of employment.
