His career in politics has spanned three decades and included every level of government. As a Minister of the Crown he brought his razor-sharp wit, intelligence and sense of humour to each of the portfolios he held. Recognized as a great debater, his sparring matches during Question Period are legendary. Deeply devoted to the Atlantic provinces, he recognized that the financial survival of the region is dependent upon a united Canada and he has rarely missed an opportunity to voice his strong belief in federalism. Now retired from politics, he continues his public service as the Chancellor of Memorial University where he has initiated a fund-raising campaign to encourage young Newfoundlanders to continue their education.
