Best known for his dominant role in taking Canadian autoworkers out of United Auto Workers, he is a champion of the working class and, in keeping with strong union traditions of social responsibility, at the forefront of many causes, from the peace movement to human rights to civil liberties. A trailblazer in the collective bargaining process, he is deeply committed to a democratic labour movement and a strong, independent Canada.
