From the beaches of Normandy, where he was seriously wounded to the echelons of the Supreme Court of Canada, where he served as Chief Justice, he has dedicated a lifetime to his country. A champion of legal rights, he made ground-breaking judgements concerning the application of the 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms which have set the tone for future constitutional rulings. A committed Red Cross volunteer for many years, he has given countless personal hours to various humanitarian causes.
