Vancouver-born athlete whose skills embrace many sports, particularly sprinting. He won two Gold Medals for the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints at the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928, placing him second to none in the long sporting history of Canada. An injured leg forced his withdrawal from active competition in 1932, but he has devoted much of his time since then to assisting other athletes and his achievements have remained, for more than half a century, as an inspiration to all Canadian sportsmen. Mr. Williams is a Freeman of the City of Vancouver and has been inducted into the Canadian Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame.
