After studies at Cambridge and Toronto he undertook geological exploration for mining companies operating in Canada and on four other continents. His international reputation as an economic geologist was further enhanced by his writings and the preparation of maps and atlases. He has served on many professional bodies, notably as first president of the Geological Association of Canada.
