Despite a painful injury, Elvis Stojko, a three-time world champion, displayed an extremely high level of professionalism while competing in the Men's Figure Skating Singles at the Nagano Olympic Winter Games in 1998. His tremendous courage under such adversity won him a Silver Medal and demonstrated his indomitable spirit and dedication to the pursuit of excellence. This is the second award of a Meritorious Service Decoration to Mr. Stojko; he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in April 1995. -

Meritorious Service Medal (civil division)
His energy, focus and dynamic style have earned the admiration of skating fans around the world and set new standards for athleticism in the sport. The first skater to complete a quadruple jump combination in international competition, Mr. Stojko was Silver Medalist at the 1994 Olympics, won the Gold Medal at the World Championships in 1994, and again at Birmingham in 1995, when he overcame an injured ankle with a stellar performance to retain his world title. His determination and dedication to his sport have been an inspiration to many, especially young Canadians.
