Douglas Samuel Wells, M.S.M. (posthumous), O.M.C., Toronto, Ontario
Meritorious Service Medal (civil division)
Douglas Wells led the creation of an outpatient clinic for the diagnosis of neurological seizures at the Wellesley Hospital in Toronto. Through the Variety Club of Ontario, he secured the necessary funds and donated ambulatory electroencephalographic recording equipment, which made available, for the first time, a more accurate, faster diagnosis and subsequent better treatment for patients with seizure disorders. This became the impetus for the Variety neurological seizures diagnostic program, founded in 1987 by Mr. Wells, which is now used in some 50 hospitals throughout Ontario.
