- Awarded on: October 25, 2006
Rank: Corporal
Corporal Whitton was deployed with the Reconnaissance Platoon, 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group during Operation ARCHER Rotation 1. On May 15, 2006, while traveling in a convoy, an accompanying vehicle struck an improvised explosive device and caught fire. Without regard for his personal safety, he immediately went to provide first aid. After successfully removing the crew commander to safety, he re-entered the burning vehicle and removed the driver. While the pursuit of enemy forces continued, Corporal Whitton administered first aid until the casualties could be evacuated. His selflessness, fortitude, and dedication minimized the injuries to others, and his actions reflected exceptionally well on him, on the Canadian Forces and on Canada.
