Constable Daryl Whitten, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
On November 4, 2009, Constable Daryl Whitten, of the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police, risked his life rescuing a man who had fallen in the Otonabee River, in Peterborough, Ontario. Constable Whitten and his colleagues rushed to the scene but could barely hear the struggling victim over the roar of the river, making it difficult to pinpoint his location in the dark. When the victim was finally found, Constable Whitten entered the water and battled the strong current to reach the man who was desperately trying to hold onto a large rock. Constable Whitten held the man's head above water and waited in the freezing river until a firefighter in full water-rescue gear arrived.
