On May 2, 2006, Sean Deakin risked his life to rescue a man from a submerged vehicle, near Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. The driver, who had apparently suffered a heart attack, lost control of his vehicle, which ended up partially submerged in a lake. While the driver tried to free himself, Mr. Deakin swam out to him and pulled him out of the vehicle. Struggling to bring the man to shore, Mr. Deakin suddenly lost his hold on the victim. Exhausted by the ordeal, Mr. Deakin was assisted out of the water by bystanders. Sadly, the victim did not survive.
