On January 15, 1998, Roy Deveau saved an elderly woman from a house fire in Saulnierville, Digby County, Nova Scotia. Mr. Deveau was on his way home when he saw thick black smoke pouring out of a house, and stopped to help a man standing outside the front entrance. Informed by the distraught man that his wife was trapped, Mr. Deveau rushed inside the house despite the risk of falling through the burning floor into the raging basement fire. Through the crackling sound of the rapidly advancing flames he heard the woman's panicked voice and groped his way along a wall until he bumped into her. Blinded by the smoke, the disoriented victim had become wedged between two chairs. Mr. Deveau managed to set her free and dragged her outside moments before the windows exploded and the entire structure burned to the ground.
