On February 24, 1994, WO Crowell shielded a comrade when a grenade exploded during a live fire grenade practice at Camp Pendleton, California. When the live grenade accidentally landed near his team's position, WO Crowell grabbed his comrade, who was nearest the grenade, and shielded him with his body. Before they could escape, the grenade detonated, blasting them with shrapnel and knocking them to the ground. Fortunately, they survived and were brought to the hospital.
