On November 1, 1984, Craig Dobie did not hesitate to rescue a three-year-old girl from a burning house. The toddler was playing in the basement when the water-heater exploded and fire spread rapidly. Upon being told by the child's mother that she had been unsuccessful in her attempts to reach the girl, Craig Dobie tried to force open the basement door only to have a blast of heavy smoke push him back. He opened the door on his second attempt and crawled on the basement floor for about two metres, found the little girl and carried her to safety. The child was subsequently taken to the hospital and treated for hand and facial burns.
