Lawrence Desroches, then aged fourteen, saved a five- year-old boy from drowning on 23 January 1979. The boy had been playing with a companion on the edge of the cooling pond of the Summerside Light Plant, when he slid into the water. His friend fetched Lawrence, who found the child floating on the water. At once he entered the icy water, and supporting himself on a pipe that extended over the pond, he grasped the child and took him to safety. After artificial respiration the victim recovered in hospital.
