Medal of Bravery
In the afternoon of 23 May 1981, through the combined efforts of Danny Daye and Doug Lowe, a man was saved from a fiery death near Pocahontas in Jasper National Park. After the man had lost control of his station wagon, it swerved across the highway by the Athabasca River, came to rest on large boulders and caught fire. Messrs. Daye and Lowe, passing motorists, quickly ran to the scene of the accident and found the unconscious driver slumped in the front seat. The vehicle was in a tilted position near the water and the victim was a very heavy man. Nevertheless, Messrs. Daye and Lowe forced open the driver's door and through heavy smoke and intense heat struggled to dislodge the man's broken legs from underneath the twisted, burning dashboard. They succeeded in pulling the driver out and in dragging him a short distance away, just before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
