Medal of Bravery
On the night of 16 July 1981, Darla Davenport and her mother Frances Bailey combined efforts in an attempt to rescue a woman from a burning house in Kingsville. The two had arrived on the scene moments after they had been alerted by a passerby. Hearing the woman moaning inside the living-room they entered at once, crawled on hands and knees, and found her lying on a burning sofa, her clothes in flames. Though the dense smoke forced them to retreat several times for fresh air, undaunted they repeatedly re-entered, once using a jacket and, later, a garden hose in order to douse the fire. Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Davenport showed persistence and determination in trying to save the victim from this tragic event.
