On the night of May 5, 1973, Randy Dalziel was sitting in an automobile with some friends when he witnessed a car plunge into the Souris River. His friends at once drove to the water's edge with headlights pointed in the direction of the victims. A young girl was heard screaming for help as she tried to hold one of the boys above water. Randy Dalziel swam out and, grasping the boy by his shirt, succeeded in bringing him to shore. He swam out a second time to help the girl to safety. Cold and exhausted, he nevertheless returned and searched for the two remaining occupants of the car, but failed to find them.
